Yep. BTDPC. It's what's for winners.

171005 GDT #2017020010: 2 Petes @ Chainlink Fence - "It's time we should be going"

2017-10-05: Could we ever bring 'em back once they have gone

Continuing with the 'hidden' theme week, I'm thinking a hint is in order, though I suspect everyone will figure it out on Sunday if it's not guessed by then. I deliberately picked songs across a pretty wide time frame to demonstrate how common the unifying element is. It's usually, though not always, pretty subtle and yet it's not something anyone will miss once they know.

2017-10-02: And you're minding your own business

It's guess the theme week. This one gets easier as the week goes. If you don't get it by the last day, you're not trying, which, let's be honest, you're not.

2017-10-01: We got the power to do that

You live long enough, you see just about anything. Here, Brit Pop's bitterest rivals finally collaborate. See what Trump can do?

2017-09-29: Suffer the Little Cuties

I was wondering if shoecore was ever coming back. Not bad. Feels like floating in a warm pool the water from which may or may not be 100% composed of one's own urine.

2017-09-28: You could get the blues

What's new(ish) music week without Lana Del Rey doing her most Del Reyed version of Florence + The Machine? Something tells me it makes no difference. And yet here it is...

2017-09-27: I pack like a cat, skate like a rat.

This wasn't the AV Undercover I was going to use, but I know half the band and they do a serviceable job. T. Rex exists in a weird place where a lot of covers are not bad but also don't end up being quite as good as the original.

2017-09-26: Let it dissolve on your tongue

No doubt you'll recognize most of this lot. This was 'Cip's suggestion, btw. I was wondering if they were Gwen to put the past behind them...puns, etc.

2017-09-25: We all know this is nothing

It's apparently everything new is old again. I've noticed many new songs are steeped in the familiar sounds of yesteryear a bit more than usual. Kicking off the week is a song released this month but would fit perfectly within the Berlin-era of Bowie. If not for the Joy Division-derived songs, I'd say the whole album was an homage to the Berlin trilogy.

2017-09-24: Teenage wasteland

Baba O'Riley - The Who

2017-09-23: Cartoon capers

Let's Go All the Way - Sly Fox

2017-09-22: What's that song?

Jessie's Girl - Rick Springfield

2017-09-18: I'm only gonna tell you one time

Runnin' with the Devil - Van Halen

2017-09-17: Falschgeld

Turns out all my contributions to Einstürzende Neubauten Week have been from their first two studio albums. For me, the early "noisy" stuff is where it's at. --FFF

2017-09-15: Abfackeln!

"Abfackeln," depending on whose translation you use, means torch or burn off. --FFF

2017-09-14: Fiat Lux: A) Fiat Lux B) Maifestspiele C) Hirnlego

While Fs is off trouncing around in the first few albums, which are pretty great and innovative unto themselves (I would have posted tomorrow's song as well), there's just too much good stuff of all shapes and sizes throughout the EN catalog to not touch on some of the other highlights. This is the one I meant to post a few weeks ago. If I recall correctly, the crowd recording is a celebration as the Berlin Wall is being torn down.

2017-09-13: Steh auf Berlin

My contributions to Neubauten Week skew heavily toward the "industrial/noise." That's my favorite part. --FFF

2017-09-12: Seele Brennt

Neubauten week continues with a little soul burning. I'm pretty sure this is the first full song I heard by EN. Intrigued by the scream clip in the MTV 120 title sequence, went to Bill's Records and Tapes and asked for a recommendation, which I'm sure was delivered with pithy scorn. Which, in retrospect, is fine. Unlike James, BHH wasn't cool. BHH will never be cool.

2017-09-11: Nevativ Nein

Looks like it's time for Neubauten Week.

2017-09-07: Ronnie Hawkins - Matchbox

As a reminder, this week is a Guess-the-Theme Week. There is a theme to the week and was submitted by someone other than myself or Fs. First person to guess who submitted it and the actual theme wins a free pat on the back. Everybody else will have to pay double for their pats-on-the-back. Really, it's surprising no one's got it yet. the answer is right in front of your faces.

2017-09-04: Clarence Carter - Road To Love

Just have a couple of weeks until preseason and then a couple of more until the games start mattering a bit. yay, hockey.

This week is a Guessed-the-Theme Week (YSWIDT?). There is a theme to the week and was submitted by someone other than myself or Fs. First person to guess who submitted it and the actual theme wins a free pat on the back. Everybody else will have to pay double for their pats-on-the-back

2017-09-03: For The Last Time

This song is so on point it hurts. Despite not watching much of the series during it's original airing, I actually bought the soundtrack CD, which wasn't great, but had a couple of songs that were iconic for the time. And when this song showed up in the 1st episode of The Return, I knew Lynch was not only back, but also better.

2017-09-02: soundtrack for maximum FX

A Lynch offering always comes with a carefully tuned sound design. It's often the case his sound content supersedes visual content. And he's not the kind of guy to stick with a folio team and a souped-up soundtrack, though he does those things, too. It's hard to find other creators so at home with manipulating sound at will and effectively bringing to the audience the weird and wonderful things recording artists happen upon but usually keep to themselves as results are just too jarring to fit within most artists' outputs.

The first here is a re-made version of "American Woman" by Muddy Magnolias, except slowed down and mixed into the show so that every kick/snare sounds like a gunshot with the vocals becoming the anguished demons escaping the wounds those gunshots create. Used at least 3 times in the series, this belly-crawl-through-the-slime is as equally effective a musical motif as Peter and the Wolf ever offered.

Including the source video for this next one would be too much of a spoiler, but even with the audio as evidence unto itself, I think it's pretty certain nobody else slows down Beethoven 5x and then drops it7 minutes into the season's rubber match for a good 3 minutes. Now imagine the fucked up visuals you'd need to see (if you haven't seen episode 8) so that the following "soundtrack" makes sense, and I tell you, truthfully, that is exactly what happens.

This last piece, Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima, needs no manipulation. It's been used many times since its composition in 1960 to soundtrack moments when humanity as a whole is perched upon the metaphorical precipice. And for good reason. Here, Lynch recreates Trinity with CGI and holy hell does it look real. I cut it at the end of Trinity here, but the musical piece and the Lynchian visuals continue for a full 10 minutes.

2017-09-01: Chug-a-lug, Donna

(slightly NSFW) From 'Fire Walk With Me", the music to The Pink Room scene does more to set up the sinister than the visuals ever could. Just your typical guitar/drum/bowed bass house band.

2017-08-31: Under the sycamore trees

This one has a "Strange Fruit" vibe to it. And a great vocal.

2017-08-30: but you can't get the feeling back

My brother likes NIN. Me, I can appreciate what Trent has tried to do over time, but not the actual product so much. This NIN song, however, is the midpoint of what I consider to be the best hour of narrative television I've seen. It's so good, I even like this song. Seriously, Episode 8 of The Return is basically an hour of unequivocally engrossing WTF video. It's like two train engines colliding in the fictional town of Grease's Rydell High, except one engine is Jackson Pollack artwork and the other engine is Koyaanisqatsi. I think I just blew a metaphor fuse...

2017-08-29: It wasn't meant to be

Hard to miss how iconic this song has been. The instrumental is still used as the show's theme.

2017-08-28: Long afloat on shipless oceans

This is the final week of Twin Peaks: The Return. Music has played as much a part as anything in creating the TP aesthetic, so here's a week of musical standouts. The first one, however, was not used in Twin peaks, nor any other Lynch production. It was, however, planned for Blue Velvet but was not able to clear right$ for the film, so Lynch worked with soon-to-be Peaks composer Angelo Badalamenti and singer (& frequent Peaks musical act) Julee Cruise to create a knock-off of sorts called "Mysteries of Love", which was ok, but certainly nowhere close to this track. Written by Tim Buckley and performed on The Monkees, This Mortal Coil slated this number for their 4AD house bands compilation and essentially turned it over to The Cocteau Twins. In any case, it's pretty easy to see this song reverberates through most of Lynch's works.

2017-04-09: Велик - Грибы

Ukranian band. Kinda like 90s style club music with rapping about chicks and psychedelics.

Thanks to the Gatest Gamer, we all know how to party like a Russian now. (The Party is never really over.)

Party like a Russian week

2017-04-07: Бьёт Бит - IOWA

Belorussian pop band. Fun video with some pretty good dancing

4.6 Intersquad playoff tuneup #2016021203: the Shimmy @ the Twist - they're out there having fun In the warm California sun

2017-04-06: Света и Олег - #дископровокация

Party like a Russian week

2017-04-05: ALTYN - TATARKA

Russian-Tatar trap. Tatarka(means tatar woman) lives in Russia, but raps in tatar.

Party like a Russian/Ukrainian Week

4.4 Limbo Season Game #2016021188: meh @ meh - Meh, we're going through the mehtions

2017-04-04: Якутяночка - L'ONE

Pop music as it comes, but with one huge but. The song is about Yakut people, who are kinda like Inuit people of Russia. When was the last time Americans celebrated some of the natives of their land in pop music?

Party like a Russian/Ukrainian Week

2017-04-03: Город под подошвой - Oxxxymiron

Russian rap. Started off spittin grime in London. Now one of the biggest rap stars we got. He's pretty damn good.

It's Party Like a Russian Week -- Russian/Ukrainian pop from Gatest Gamer!

2017-04-02: Give me your money - Little Big

Basically Russian Die Antwoord. Pretty crappy music, but fun video. Don't watch it around your boss or your kids. Or don't watch it at all, you won't miss much.

2017-04-01: Кольщик - Ленинград

Probably among the most popular Russian bands of the last 20 years. Leningrad started off as a ska-ish band with a shocking (for Russia at at that time) amount of profanity in lyrics, while singing about lower class Joe Shmoe problems (Yes I'm an alcoholic; I thought you were an angel, but you're just a bitch etc). Eventually that got old and the singer started hiring different women to take over and drive the music style. This is its current iteration with their latest video, which is hell of a masterpiece. The name of the band is Leningrad, I expect all of you know what it means. If you don't, just google it.

3.31 Silly Season Game #2016021152: You want it @ you can't have it - Every day you'll see the dust

2017-03-31: Звери - Tequilajazzz

Ok we're within Mother Russia now. This is probably my favorite Russian band, creating a pretty unique style, with the rhythm section still mostly unmatched in Russia. This song is pretty simple musically, but the video is pretty good. Tequilajazzz means exactly what you think it means and is pronounced exactly the way you think it is pronounced.

2017-03-30: Але - 5'nizza

Ukrainian, bi tri, however many language band. Started off as couple of stoner theater nerds jamming to various black music - reggae, RnB, hip-hop etc. They released 2 albums in early 00s and became massively popular in Eastern Bloc before breaking up in early 10s. They have now reformed and released a new album, where this song is taken from. It's in Ukranian and Russian, and it is about missed opportunities in life. The band's name is a stylized word "pyatnitsa" which means "friday"

3.29 Silly Season Game #2016021137: 3 Cups in 6 @ 2 Cups in 8 - You've been had if you think that it had any relevance to you anyway

2017-03-29: Așa și așa - Cuibul

Not done with Moldova yet, because Gamer has a huge crush on the singer. Cuibul started off as a Russian speaking rock/funk fusion band in the 90s. Few years ago the band members realized they all got old and nobody wanted to look at bunch of old dudes playing loud music, so they found the current singer, allowed her to translate their songs into Romanian and rearranged them into this light acoustic lounge. Cuibul means "Nest"

2017-03-28: Nunta extremală - Zdob și Zdub

Now we move to Moldova, and crashing a wedding. Zdob si Zdub have been around since mid 90s, starting off as a hardcore band and gradually integrating more and more ethnic elements into their music and losing the hardcore element. This song is from 1999, just as they started getting into ethnic stuff. A fun fact: "Zdob si Zdub" is an onomatopoetic for a beating drum

3.27 Silly Season Game #2016021124: We Got No Harty @ Last Cup Moments - And when I fall I really fall and that's when you go to my head

2017-03-27: VARJÚ - Másfél

Music from the Eastern Bloc, going from west to east

We're gonna start off with the westernmost band on the list: Masfel, from Hungary. Masfel is a an instrumental fusion band, that's been around since late 80s, although it has been pretty quiet for the last decade or so. It's fun instrumental stuff. Masfel means 1.5, a word that's present in plenty of languages, but not in english. -Gatest Gamer
